Job Summary

Zendesk provides software that helps its 160,000+ paid customer accounts across more than 150 countries and territories to build the best customer experience. Zendesk is looking for a Counsel, Privacy - a privacy expert who will have responsibility for providing legal guidance on privacy topics. This role reports to Zendesks Director of Privacy. What you get to do every day

  • Support the global privacy program to ensure business practices meet legal compliance.
  • Champion and support cross-functional data protection and privacy projects.
  • Deliver strategic privacy legal advice and insights to our marketing, HR, sales and other legal and non-legal teams.
  • Develop and deliver training, guidelines, playbooks and best practices on privacy and data protection matters for legal and non-legal teams.
  • Review and complete risk assessments (including DPIAs, TIAs, TRAs) and privacy compliance documentation.
  • Act as the escalation point for commercial and procurement agreements involving privacy, including negotiation of DPAs, BAAs, and other privacy-related provisions.
  • Stay informed of changes and developments in privacy laws, regulations, standards and guidance.

What you bring to the role

  • 2+ years of relevant experience as specialized privacy counsel, 5+ years as a qualified lawyer.
  • Admitted to practice law in the U.S.
  • Strong HIPAA/HITECH compliance and contracting experience, including counseling internal and external parties
  • Experience with U.S. and international privacy and data protection laws, regulations and standards, including GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, LGPD, PIPEDA, HIPAA.
  • Experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a variety of commercial agreements including DPAs and BAAs.
  • Experience developing and implementing playbooks, privacy notices, and policies.
  • Familiarity with digital technologies, data processing concepts, and information security requirements.
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience supporting cross-functional projects.
  • Problem solver with a focus on practical solutions and guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to pivot seamlessly in response to evolving organizational needs, showcasing a flexible and dynamic approach to duties and responsibilities.
  • Accountable and hands-on, self-starter, results-oriented.
  • Strong interest in global privacy and data protection laws and regulations.
  • IAPP certifications are a plus.
  • Experience providing pragmatic and actionable advice to internal clients on legal risks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Fluent English (both verbal and written), fluency or knowledge of other languages is a plus.
  • Experience working with SaaS at a global tech company.

The US annualized base salary range for this position is $180,000.00-$270,000.00. This position may also be eligible for bonus, benefits, or related incentives. While this range reflects the minimum and maximum value for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations, the offer for the successful candidate for this position will be based on job related capabilities, applicable experience, and other factors such as work location. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only (or OTE for commissions based roles), and do not include bonus, benefits, or related incentives.
