The Senior Counsel Marketing & Advertising will be the legal counsel for the function Marketing, Regulatory and Mars Retail Group within Mars Wrigley business, reporting to the General Counsel, North America. The successful candidate will be an effective business partner to senior leaders, helping shape the future of our marketing and advertising strategy..

Working in a highly collaborative manner with the broader Mars legal teams (e.g., Food Law, Sustainability, Compliance, Corporate Development, and Privacy), the Senior Counsel is accountable for delivering holistic legal support to grow the business, manage legal risks and protect the Mars Wrigley brands and reputation. The role is North America focused, with the potential to work on projects that scale to regions outside North America.

The Senior Counsel will be a highly skilled lawyer with an excellent track record of creating collaborative relationships across a complex, matrixed organization. What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Serve as the legal lead for marketing, advertising, regulatory, licensing and brand innovation initiatives,

  • Partner with the Mars Wrigley Marketing, R&D and Commercial teams, to develop and implement the effective marketing and advertising of our brands,

  • Partner with the Marketing Properties team to drive brand optimization and with the Intellectual Property team to protect and secure high ROI on commercially valuable IP,

  • Partner with the Mars Compliance and Privacy legal team, and Mars Global Services legal resources, to secure the needed support and expertise in connection with technology and personal data collection, processing and use,

  • Collaborate and partner with the regional and local cross-segment legal counterparts across Mars, Inc. to ensure a consistent and aligned One Mars approach on key matters and issues,

  • Collaborate and partner with the regional business stakeholders and relevant members of the Mars Wrigley legal team for global projects.

Skills, Capabilities and Experience required:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school with 6+ years of legal experience required, ideally with experience in both a well-respected law firm and in the legal department of a successful, complex, growth company,

  • Experience in the consumer-packaged goods sector is required; experience in a consumer facing business in the food/beverage sector is preferred,

  • Broad-based legal experience supporting marketing, advertising and regulatory affairs on food law issues, including drafting and negotiating a variety of agreements (e.g., agency, talent, influencer, licensing, co-collaboration, etc.), with a solid understanding of the associated regulatory environment (FDA, FTC), competition law, data privacy and intellectual property legal issues.

  • Experience working through food regulatory matters is strongly preferred.

  • Experience managing complex litigations and/or sustainability issues preferred.

  • Experience sitting on business leadership teams and/or providing counsel to senior business leaders is preferred.

  • Creative, agile thinker with an entrepreneurial, solutions-oriented mindset to drive business growth objectives.

  • Capable of analyzing complex legal and policy issues from a commercial perspective.

  • Excellent relationship and influencing skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Strong, flexible team player and collaborator that works to meet both personal and organization goals. Ability to navigate a matrixed organization to deliver results.

  • Ability to travel if necessary.
