What youll do here

The mission of the Compliance Team at Cengage Group is to define and manage an organized approach to ensuring that we comply with all applicable laws and regulations, and that our internal policies address the legal and regulatory frameworks that apply to our businesses. Equally important, our Compliance philosophy is focused on encouraging ethical behavior doing what is right even when not strictly required under the law.

In close partnership with the Chief Compliance Officer, the Sr. Privacy Counsel will create the vision and set the roadmap and strategy for Cengage Groups privacy program. As a key compliance leader and privacy subject matter expert, you will have the opportunity to build our privacy program, shape our approach to privacy and act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on privacy-related risks.

Responsibilities / Scope

  • Design and execute a privacy strategy and roadmap that is aligned to and supportive of Cengage Group's overall business objectives, taking into account our products, customers, geographic presence, etc.
  • As Cengage Group's subject matter expert, provide ongoing privacy counseling and advice to our businesses and corporate functions, collaborating closely with stakeholders at all levels across the organization.
  • Assess and respond to potential privacy risks and implement a risk-based approach to reduce exposure.
  • Maintain continuous awareness and familiarity with all new and proposed privacy legislation, support state and federal lobbying efforts with respect to privacy-related initiatives, and advise on the companys risk exposure associated with new and proposed legislation.
  • Create and maintain privacy notices, policies, and privacy-related contractual language and templates, as needed.
  • Oversee implementation and maintenance of privacy-related processes and controls
  • Conduct ongoing privacy compliance monitoring and provide reporting to senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, such as Product, Technology, and Security, to ensure privacy considerations are holistically integrated into business roadmaps, systems and initiatives, as well as new or modified products and customer-facing platforms.
  • Assist in investigations of potential data breach incidents and act as the primary contact and spokesperson in such incidents.
  • Ensure compliance with the Companys obligations to report data breach incidents to regulators and other affected parties.
  • Design and manage periodic privacy risk assessments and contribute to enterprise risk management initiatives from a data privacy perspective.
  • Drive enterprise and employee awareness around privacy-related topics and conduct regular training
  • Create and evolve program metrics and KPIs.

Required Skills / Experience

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to, and good standing with, a state bar. Can be licensed in any state.
  • 5 -7 years of privacy experience with an in-house legal department or top law firm.
  • Deep legal expertise in current and proposed privacy laws, in particular US and GDPR regulations.
  • Comfort working in a globally distributed, highly matrixed organization.
  • Experience building and overseeing an enterprise-wide privacy program [strongly preferred].
  • Strategic thinking grounded in strong, pragmatic business acumen with demonstrated ability to balance legal risk with business considerations (i.e., comfort operating in situations which are often "grey" instead of "black and white")
  • Ability to develop followership and explain the why behind our vision for privacy, and ability to translate complex privacy topics into easily digestible content for internal stakeholders.
  • Exceptional problem-solving, decision-making, and risk assessment skills.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring skills. Experience advising and guiding senior-level management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience drafting and negotiating privacy related contracts, such as data processing agreements.
  • Adept at building strong working relationships with colleagues at all levels in order to influence (at times without direct authority) and successfully lead cross-functional teams.

The full base pay range has been provided for this position. Individual base pay will vary based on work schedule, qualifications, experience, internal equity, and geographic location. Sales roles often incorporate a significant incentive compensation program beyond this base pay range.

$155,300.00 - $248,500.00 USD
