Wright Public Entity serves as a management company providing claims administration, risk management & loss control, underwriting & marketing, and client services in New York for the NY Schools Insurance Reciprocal (NYSIR: A- rated by Best), NY Municipal Insurance Reciprocal (NYMIR: A- rated by Best) and Statewide Schools Health Plan. We also act as a TPA for Workers Compensation for various self-insured schools & municipalities in New York, and a national education program.

The Professional Liability Claims Specialist/Claims Counsel will be responsible for oversight and day-to-day supervision of professional liability claims including Employment Practices Liability, Section 42 USC 1983 litigation/civil rights, Police Professional, Educators Legal Liability, Public Officials Liability including Land Use and other E&O type claims.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluating coverage and drafting coverage letters,

  • Evaluating liability and damages exposures and case reserves,

  • Proactive litigation management,

  • Conducting settlement negotiations and monitoring trials,

  • Preparing reinsurance notices,

  • Frequent communication with internal and external business partners, and

  • Other functions generally associated with claims handling.

Competencies:

  • Possesses the ability to organize and prioritize work activities timely and efficiently

  • Possesses good written and oral communication skills

  • Possesses the ability to analyze problems, evaluate alternatives, and select the best course of action in a timely manner

  • Possesses negotiation skills

Position Requirements:

  • 5-7 years relevant experience

  • Public sector and/or education is a plus

  • JD preferred

  • For non-attorneys, a NYS independent adjuster license is required

  • Occasional travel may be required
