ABOUT THE POSITION
Associate Self-Help Attorneys provide legal services and legal information to self-represented litigants in support of the Los Angeles Superior Court's Self-Help programs, which may include some work in courtrooms in session.
Associate Self-Help Attorneys will be employed for a one-year limited term of employment. Upon approval by the Court, Associate Self-Help Attorneys may be employed for two additional one-year limited terms of employment. Total limited term employment shall not exceed more than three years. Employment is completely "At Will".

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
To qualify, you must meet the following requirements at the time of filing:
Graduation with a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school -AND- admission to practice law before the Supreme Court of the State of California -AND- A member of the California State Bar in good standing.
Those that took the California State Bar Examination in 2023 and are awaiting results may also apply.*
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid California Class C driver's license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
* Those that took the California State Bar Examination in 2023 and awaiting results must provide proof of successfully passing the California State Bar Examination. Proof must be emailed to [email protected] in order to be placed on the eligibility list. Failure to submit proof of admission to the California State Bar by the deadline date will result in your application being disqualified.
Associate Self-Help Attorneys may only practice law within the scope of their duties as employees of the Court, and are prohibited by Court policy from any outside practice of law during the course of their employment. This prohibition includes giving legal advice, receiving fees, and/or appearing in any court on behalf of another person.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of one or more terms of volunteer service in JusticeCorps
- Volunteer experience providing legal assistance to self-represented or low-income litigants
- Experience working or volunteering to teach, train, or coach others
- Other volunteer experience(s)
- Community involvement
- Volunteer or work experience in a courtroom or courthouse
- Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, in other languages in addition to English
