Job Description:

Iowa State University is seeking applications for an Associate Counsel. Under the supervision of University Counsel, the Associate Counsel will serve as the lead counsel on student affairs issues at a major research university with over 34,000 students. The Associate Counsel provides legal advice to various university administrators and staff members on student issues, including first amendment issues, Title IX compliance, FERPA compliance, ADA & FHA compliance, Clery Act compliance, and ICRA compliance. The Associate Counsel advises and works closely with the office of student conduct regarding student disciplinary cases. The Associate Counsel may also be asked to provide advice on study abroad matters and to draft and negotiate agreements for student internships and student exchanges.

In addition to student affairs advising, the Associate Counsel also advises the office of risk management, coordinates with the Iowa Attorney General’s Office regarding non-employment litigation, , investigates and handles external charges brought by students with civil rights agencies (e.g. Iowa Civil Rights Commission, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, etc.) and responds to subpoenas served on the University.

To achieve institutional goals, the successful candidate will have the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of individuals both internal and external to the University. The candidate will possess the ability to exercise sound judgement on challenging issues and perform tasks with professionalism, diligence and integrity. The ability to work independently on routine legal matters, and to recognize issues of institutional importance and keep the University Counsel appropriately informed are essential qualifications.
