Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

All initial attorney positions to the Department of Justice are made on a 14-month (temporary) basis. Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree. This position serves as the Assistant Director in the Legal Programs Office of the Executive Office for United States Attorneys (EOUSA). The Legal Programs Office is functionally responsible for providing management support, assistance and advice, and policy guidance regarding legal process and procedures for the United States Attorneys in a variety of programs and areas, including: affirmative civil enforcement, appellate, asset forfeiture, bankruptcy, border and immigration, child exploitation, civil defensive litigation, civil rights, cybercrime, eDiscovery, financial litigation, health care fraud, human trafficking, narcotics, Native American issues, victim witness, violent crime, and white collar crime. Legal Programs coordinates all aspects of these programs, including training, funding, legislation, administration, outreach, and assessment. Legal Programs also develops and promotes policies and procedures to improve the effectiveness of these programs, and serves as a resource for the United States Attorneys' offices (USAOs) on legal and administrative issues affecting the programs. In addition, Legal Programs provides advice and support for various subcommittees and working groups of the Attorney General's Advisory Committee.

Work involves critical federal legal programs that are nationwide in scope, supports accomplishment of EOUSA and USAO goals and objectives, and supplies the legal basis for critical decisions involving programs nationwide. Typical assignments will include:
  • Advising management and other federal agencies on asset forfeiture and financial litigation policies, programs, laws, procedures, and issues.
  • Identifying changes in federal statutes, case law and regulations affecting asset forfeiture and financial litigation programs.
  • Analyzing changes in Department of Justice policies and other issues of direct relevance to asset forfeiture and financial litigation programs.
  • Directing the activities and initiatives of staff which support Asset Forfeiture and Financial Litigation efforts of USAOs.
