As Deputy General Counsel you will be under the supervision and direction of the General Counsel. You will provide advice and counsel in a wide variety of areas including, but not limited to, business, construction and technology contracts. Counsel will be required to perform a range of tasks, including analyzing legal liability, rendering advice to staff, managing outside counsel, attending Board and staff meetings, and representing the District at administrative and court hearings. This position requires an ability to conduct staff training and coordinate with all levels of personnel, including school site staff, central office administrators, executive leadership and electedofficials. The Deputy General Counsel will also perform other duties as assigned by the General Counsel.

We expect our Deputy General Counsel to:

● Proactively advise and provide technical expertise, information and assistance to staff regarding a wide range legal issues;

● Assist in the formulation and development of policies, procedures and programs to support management, internal controls or corrective action with regard to the assigned areas and departments;

● Provide day-to-day legal advice and counseling;

● Draft legal documents, rules and regulations, resolutions, and other legal documents upon request;

● Represent the District in judicial and administrative proceedings at every level including the preparation of legal memoranda, pleadings and briefs;

● Attend and provide legal advice and counsel at meetings of the Board of Education and such other meetings as directed by the General Counsel;

● Communicate with other administrators, personnel and outside organizations to coordinate activities and programs, resolve issues and conflicts and exchange information;

● Manage outside counsel;

● Provide advice and counseling in a manner consistent with the District’s Service Standards: communicating positively and proactively; responding in a timely; professional, and accurate manner; seeking to understand concerns by listening and asking questions; empathizing and considering different perspectives; offering options when appropriate and differentiating support; being solutions-oriented; and collaborating and sharing responsibility to solve challenges;

● Provide counsel and legal opinions to district leaders, including Superintendent, Associate Superintendent of Policy & Operations, Facilities, Financial Services, and Technology, with respect to legal implications of decisions;

● Provides claims avoidance counseling and defense for public entities conducting capital programs involving complex construction and joint development projects;

● Analyzes and resolves construction bid protests;

● Prepares and/or reviews contract documents for construction projects and for the purchase, lease, or sale of goods, services, software subscription agreements, and professional services including specifications, bid documents, requests for proposals, requests for qualifications, bonds, and contractual agreements;

● Drafts and oversees Requests for Proposals and contract templates.

● Drafts and negotiates leases, joint use agreements, and memoranda of understanding; and

● Provides assistance in real estate transactions including acquisition and sale of land and interests in land through preparation of contracts, leases, easements, deeds, trust deeds, instruments of title, liens, releases and other documents.

● Perform other duties as assigned

Salary Range: $184,869.80-$230,956.52/annually
Appointment Type: Permanent Exempt
Hours: Full time/full year
