orthrop Grumman seeks to add a Managing Tax Counsel to support the Tax Planning & Controversy Group. The Group anticipates the primary responsibility would be assisting with the IRS federal tax examination with a secondary responsibiliy for assisting with VAT matters. The position is based at Northrop Grummans corporate office in Falls Church, Virginia. Work includes obtaining and analyzing source data, identifying and addressing risks and opportunities, and communicating potential risks and opportunities with stakeholders. The Managing Tax Counsel will additionally be responsible for leading projects, reviewing work, contributing new concepts, techniques and standards. Most assignments are complex and performed independently without appreciable direction with the ability to work as part of a team given the size of the projects invovled.

The Manager Tax Counsel will have one direct report, whose primary responsibility is to provide subject matter expertise on VAT and FATCA, secondary responsibility is assisting with the IRS exam primarily by gathering documents to respond to information requests from the IRS. The IRS examination typically focuses on R&D tax credits, and typically involves responses related to them and analyzing workpapers to ensure the company provides correct information and develops the record to make its case. The Manager Tax Counsel will have responsibility to develop the direct report's expertise in federal tax matter.

Position Summary/Responsibilities:

Advising teams on various Federal and International tax controversy and planning, which would include work on workpapers, models, transaction documents, and slides and memoranda on various tax considerations.

Teaming with Legal, Accounting, Treasury, Financial Planning, Business Development and other functions to assist in substantiating tax positions as well as identifying and implementing business transactions while managing tax considerations

Advising on ASC 740 treatment of tax planning and controversies

Teaming with the tax compliance and reporting groups by providing them information to ensure appropriate filings

Assist company with amendments to prior filings, withholding and similar issues

Basic Qualifications:

10 years of experience in the areas of responsibility with a JD, or equivalent, i.e. 5 years directly relevant experience at a nationally recognized public accounting firm or law firm with a JD.

Admitted to practice law in one of the 50 States of the USA or the District of Columbia, with current status as an active member of the Bar in Virginia or an ability to waive into admission.

Experience in major tax issues from a tax controversy perspective

Demonstrated interpersonal skills to work with internal and external stakeholders, including senior executives as well as staff, and tax and non-tax personnel.

Ability to analyze and interpret federal, state, and international tax laws and regulations.

Ability to perform tax research, analyze appropriate authorities and reach sound conclusions.

Must be able to multi-task, work independently, be self-motivated and demonstrate strong judgment/decision-making skills.

Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills, as well as project management, planning, and human relations skills with the ability to prioritize and balance requests in a fast paced, dynamic environment.

Proficient with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiar with using software like SAP, HFM, or business warehouse

Prior experience in a supervisory role

Significant experience with tax planning on transactions, restructurings, R&D tax credits, domestic production incentives, Federal income tax accounting issues, and state tax, and compensation and benefits tax matters

Significant experience with financial accounting treatment of tax issues under ASC 740

Familiarity with impact of Tax Cuts and Jobs Act for purposes of tax returns and financial reporting

Manufacturing/Aerospace/Defense Industry, Big 4 Accounting or Top 20 Law Firm, or publicly traded company experience

Salary Range: $164,300.00 - $246,500.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
