WHAT YOU BRING
- Minimum of a Juris Doctorate and an active member of the California Bar
- Minimum five (5) years of extensive and varied impact litigation experience, including as lead litigator with co-counsel, and preferably with background in addressing social justice issues
- Minimum one year (1) of supervisory experience
- Bilingual / biliterate in at least one Asian or Pacific Islander language (Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Tagalog, Thai, Vietnamese, Khmer, Samoan, Tongan or others) preferred
- Dedication to serving immigrant communities and a sincere commitment to working on behalf of low-income immigrants
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to write and speak persuasively to diverse audiences, including general public, media, lawyers, advocates, funders, donors, and opinion leaders.
- Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
- The ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
- Valid driver's license and/or access to alternative means of transportation
Qualifications:
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Managing Attorney, under the direction of the Litigation Director, supervises the work of staff attorneys and legal advocates. The Managing Attorney provides client counseling and representation, in addition to community outreach and education. The role is also responsible for performing administrative duties, such as performance reviews, fund reporting and grant management.
Your typically day-to-day responsibilities:
60% Lead litigation cases and provide client representation.
- Meet with and advise clients of legal rights and issues
- Conduct legal research and writing in response to client needs
- Prepare court forms and other documents on behalf of clients
- Represent clients in depositions, hearings, and court or administrative proceedings
- Research, analyze, draft and applicate policy/legislation
- Participate in the development and implementation of annual practice work plan
25% Support community outreach and education
- Work with clients and their communities organizing meetings, workshops, and rallies
- Collaborate with community partner organizations
- Train volunteers and Pro-Bono attorneys to serve clients and communities
15% Perform Administrative duties
- Supervise day-to-day work load of staff attorneys, legal advocates, and interns.
- Participate in annual performance review and submit recommendations to Director
- Provide case management, compliance with contracts and ethical codes.
