The Position

This new team member will join our in-house legal team supporting development of utility-scale renewable energy projects. The ideal candidate will have experience in some combination of greenfield land acquisition, environmental risk assessment, zoning and permitting, along with the ability to collaborate with colleagues across multiple areas of expertise. Our work environment is inclusive and flexible. There will be exceptional room for growth and influence based upon the candidates skills and interests.

This new position will be located in our Scottsdale, Arizona office, but well-qualified candidates may be considered for remote work. Occasional travel to our offices or project sites (up to 20 days per year) will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Work with project managers, development team leadership and outside counsel in connection with acquisition and management of land rights for project sites, including advice regarding:
    • Strategies for efficient negotiation and execution of new land options;
    • Development risks and proposed curative actions based upon review of title reports, ALTA surveys, and environmental site assessments;
    • Zoning and permitting processes;
    • Tracking of payment and other obligations under existing agreements; and
    • Compliance with document approval, handling and retention protocols.
  • Management of outside/local counsel.
  • Participation in constant process improvements in line with company objectives.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor or LLM from accredited law school.
  • At least four years of relevant experience with a law firm, real estate development or management company, or project financing company.
  • Strong understanding of real estate law in at least one jurisdiction, and proficiency in application.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to build trust and confidence across the company.
  • Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work as an integrated part of a team in a fast-paced environment and effectively manage multiple priorities.
  • Attention to detail and the desire for continuous process improvement.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one United States jurisdiction.
  • Project financing or energy industry experience is a plus, but not required.
